Dana Southworth, President of Building Performance Resources has been trained as a HERS rater by the Kansas Building Science Institute and is certified by RESNET. Dana has also taken training on superinsulated house design and construction techniques, with additional training scheduled for the future. We use REM/Rate for our energy modeling, which is a very intensive residential energy program that calculates, among many other things, the heating and cooling load of a home, energy costs, and generates energy upgrade cost effectiveness reports. We also use state of the art diagnostic equipment such as a Minneapolis Blower Door®, Minneapolis Duct Blaster®, and infrared thermometers. Being able to obtain solid, real information about a house and its energy performance is paramount, because without it, everything is just educated guesswork. What are HERS raters?
HERS raters are special inspectors certified by RESNET to rate homes in the United States according to the Home Energy Rating System (HERS). These ratings include field verification and diagnostic testing to determine energy efficiency levels among homes tested for duct efficiency, envelope leakage and building insulation for compliance with certain building efficiency standards, such as Energy Star™ and IECC. RESNET Ratings provide a relative energy use index called the HERS® Index - a HERS Index of 100 represents the energy use of the "American Standard Building" and an Index of 0 (zero) indicates that the proposed building uses no net purchased energy (a Zero Energy Building). A set of rater recommendations for cost-effective improvements that can be achieved by the rated building is also produced.
